Sujeewa Kumari

ABOUT ARTIST

Sujeewa Kumari Weerasinghe holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Research in Visual Arts and Media from the Dutch Art Institute (2004) and a BFA in painting from the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka (1998).

Sujeewa's recent works grapple with de-realized memories derived from history, tradition, and daily life to formulate an artistic synthesis of new cultural images. Appropriated images from antique photographs are a central theme in her current body of work. She reuses these images and transforms them by juxtaposing, overlapping, and layering different visuals together in colors, prints, and mixed media. She was shortlisted for the 2019 Sovereign Asian Art Prize.

Her work has been featured at the Dhaka Art Summit, Dhaka (2018), the Colombo Art Biennale, Colombo (2016), Saskia Fernando Gallery, The Garden of Eden, Shalini Ganendra Fine Art, Petaling Jaya (2013/2014), Between Kismet and Karma: South Asian Woman Artists Respond to Conflict, Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds (2010), Return in Search of Stillness, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Edinburgh (2017), and Artful Resistance: Crisis and Creativity in Sri Lankan, Museum fur Volkerkunde Vienna (2008).
