Jezima Mohamed & The Women Jez-Look Batik Matara

ABOUT ARTIST

Born in 1940, Matara-based batik artist Jezima Mohamed has spent decades developing her own style of batik. Her work combines storytelling, hand-drawn designs, bold colours, and smooth colour blends.

Each of Jezima’s works is drawn by hand, with every stage of the process thoughtfully planned—from waxing and dyeing to the layering of colour and evolving techniques that give each piece its distinctive character.

Jezima works closely with a team of 15 women, many of whom have been part of her practice for many years. This collaborative process brings together generations of knowledge, skill, and craftsmanship, with Jezima at the centre of the creative direction.

Her work bridges traditional batik techniques with a distinctly personal approach to composition and colour. Through her continued experimentation, Jezima demonstrates the versatility of batik as an artistic medium, creating works that are both deeply rooted in craft and expressive of her individual artistic vision.
